Parking lots with very heavy traffic must be paved with durable, thick asphalt capable of supporting intensive traffic while also resisting temperature variations, especially freeze-thaw cycles.
The asphalt parking lot base must be 60 mm thick and made with ESG-14 bituminous mix containing large aggregates composed of 4.5% bitumen. This provides excellent foundation stability.
A surface layer is then applied using an ESG-10 asphalt mix containing 10 mm aggregates composed of approximately 5.5% bitumen.
Your municipality establishes the standards for parking space dimensions and the slopes required for proper water drainage.
Residential and commercial: what are the differences?
A residential asphalt parking lot (a home driveway) is used by a limited number of vehicles. A properly prepared foundation and a standard asphalt thickness are usually sufficient to ensure good durability.
A commercial asphalt parking lot must withstand much heavier traffic, sometimes including heavy vehicles.
In this case, the foundation must be stronger and the asphalt thicker to prevent cracks, sinking, or potholes from forming.
